Festival of Fire & Faith

Walking on fire with faith, courage, and divine blessings.

Fire Walking Festival

The annual Theemithi (Fire Walking) Festival is one of the most important Hindu events in Singapore, drawing thousands of participants and spectators every year. This three-month-long festival is packed with rituals and ceremonies, all leading up to the main fire-walking event. It takes place at Sri Mariamman Temple on South Bridge Road-the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore.

With a history of over 150 years, Theemithi has deep roots in Singapore's Hindu tradition. It was first brought here by early migrants from Tamil Nadu, who worked under British colonial rule. The festival is inspired by the epic Mahabharata, honouring Sri Drowpathai Amman, a key figure in the story and one of the main deities at Sri Mariamman Temple. Walking barefoot across burning embers symbolises the fulfilment of her vow after the great war in the epic.
